Introducing the team behind the much-loved The Umhlanga Magazine! We love all things local, community and celebrating the beautiful Umhlanga. We pour our heart and soul into every edition we publish, and we’re thankful to have kept our magazine running as (un)usual throughout this tough year and continue to give our locals great stories! Meet our Fab Team and find out why they love being a part of this community.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT UMHLANGA?
Lorinda Scott (Founder and Co-CEO)
Our “boss-lady” has grown FabMags from a single publication (Seaward Press) to over 14 titles with a significant online presence. She drives her business and team to share fabulous stories in a quality product!
“Umhlanga has the most beautiful sea views, especially from one of my absolutely favourite spots in SA, The Oyster Box Hotel. We love the promenade walk and stopping for fabulous coffee at one of our many favourite spots along the way. We also love the M4 drive from Ballito and often stop for breakfast at Caffe Java in Umdloti! Sandbar is also next level when it comes to vibe, food and location. Gateway is one of our favourite trips out to shop as it covers everything under one roof! Best of all, there is a Starbucks to end off our shopping trip!”
Justin Scott (Co-Founder)
Justin has a hand in strategic guidance and management of the business, and his goal is to grow FabMags into the best it can be. His knowledge of tech and business strategy has helped the business greatly in print, social, digital and online.
“There is nothing better than a nice drive to clear one’s head, or to listen to more than one song in the car (Ballito living does not allow for playlists). I love that Umhlanga is alive with opportunity and it has a business vibe about it like no other. I love the new, shiny things like the Umhlanga Arch. I also love Umdloti for a breakfast with the family or a quick business meeting with a great view! I love visits or overnight stays at The Oyster Box Hotel – it feels like you are in another country, yet it is only a short 20-minute drive. Shopping options in Umhlanga are also very impressive and for guys, great clothing and shoe options are many. At the Arch, The Gentry and Moustache Barber Shop all allow for a good man’s morning out!”
Sharlene Odayar (Production Manager)
Sharlz keeps our machine running smoothly by controlling and pulling together production with our tight and busy magazine production schedule.
“I love the beautiful beaches and afternoon walks on the promenade with my family. We also often spread time at Funtubbles in Gateway – my toddler absolutely loves it! My favourite thing to do is lunch at Umhlanga’s amazing restaurants.”
Lucille Wendler (Sales Director)
Lucille works with drive, energy and a great passion for achieving goals and meeting targets. She effectively leads her team while making sales herself. You go, Luc!
“My favourite spot has got to be Umdloti, which is part of the greater Umhlanga area. SandBar is great for cocktails and a quick bite in the late afternoon with a great view. I also love taking my dogs for a walk on the walkway and it’s a nice beach for swimming and snorkelling.”
Philemon Majola (Distribution Manager)
Making sure our magazines get into the hands of our readers, Philemon manages the distribution of all our community magazines. Thank you, Philemon!
Taryn Sathialoken (Sales Admin)
As our admin guru, Taryn has her eye on the ball! She also works on sales for our estate based magazines.
“What I love most is the calm and relaxed vibe, and my absolute favourite spot in Umhlanga is the Lagoon Nature Reserve – it’s paradise!”
Jordie Trotter (Journalist)
Jordie joined the team this year and has since taken up all content for our popular mags and continues to make our stories come to life.
“I enjoy going to some of the great local coffee spots in Umhlanga, such as Tiki Tonga and African Roots. Spending the morning people watching while enjoying a cuppa is awesome!”
Jordyn Trollip (Copy Editor)
Jordyn is our in-house copy editor for all of our mags. This is her love for reading translated into a job!
“What I love most about Umhlanga is that you can get all glammed up to spend a night filled with yummy drinks and food in Umhlanga Village. The vibe there at night is absolutely electric and you’re sure to have a great meal at any one of the restaurants.”
Amy Meyer (Sales Executive)
Amy is our charismatic sales executive that focuses her attention on The Umhlanga Magazine, but also works hard for our other estate based magazines.
“I love that Umhlanga is always vibey. There is always a buzz, from the morning coffee run to the lunchtime catch-up breaks and the evening festive vibes. Umhlanga provides so much variation and there is something for everyone, like the breakfast at Mary + Joe, lunch at Little Havana or dinner at Taco Zulu.”
Savannah Greyvenstein (Designer)
Savannah brings to life the pages of The Umhlanga Magazine and The Midlands Magazine, but also works on some of our estate based magazines and digimags.
“My new found favourite in Umhlanga is Bellezar. It’s such an awesome venue right on the promenade, the vibe is really amazing and their sushi is out of this world!”
Evashini Naidoo (Designer)
Evash is our graphic designer who works on The Ballito Magazine, alongside other estate based and digital mags. She makes sure this mag looks gorgeous every edition!
“I love the amazing food, drinks, coffee and ice cream at various great restaurants and cafés in Umhlanga. I also enjoy spending time in the parks, on the promenade (admiring the beautiful views) and watching movies at Gateway!”
Sayantha Govender (Admin)
Saya is our helping hand with all things admin, especially for our boss-lady and sales director.
“I love Umhlanga mainly because of the blue pier in December. Umhlanga is also so central and it’s easy to get from place to place. My family is there and I get to see the ocean every day on my way to work!”
Brita Kleinhans (Sales Executive)
Brita is our passionate sales executive for our popular The Midlands Magazine. She loves all things Midlands and local, and worked on our North Coast magazines 10 years ago!
THANK YOU TO OUR READERS FOR YOUR UNWAVERING SUPPORT DURING THIS CRAZY YEAR. WE WISH YOU A MEMORABLE CHRISTMAS AND FANTASTIC NEW YEAR. BRING ON 2021!
