The Waffle Society

Mornings Done Right

We headed down to Compensation Beach Road, in Ballito, where The Waffle Society sits in its cosy corner in stripes of red and pink that you can’t miss. The cool morning ocean breeze was rolling in with the warm North Coast sunshine. The staff greeted us like regulars, and we settled in to take our time with the menu, because honestly, choosing is half the fun.

We kicked off with drinks while we debated the food: a Dirty Chai, Caribbean Coconut Hot Chocolate, Strawberry Iced Matcha, and Mixed Berry Smoothie.

We went big with their all-day breakfast menu. First up, The Breakfast Club, a cheese- and caramelised-onion-stuffed waffle piled high with streaky bacon, two eggs, silky hollandaise sauce, and a hit of chilli jam. Then came The Rise & Shine, which proves waffles can be healthy yet indulgent, with dark chocolate and coconut granola, fresh banana, berry compote, lime syrup, peanut butter crémeaux and yoghurt, all paired with blueberry waffle bites. It’s bright, rich, and somehow makes you feel virtuous while essentially eating dessert for breakfast.

Not in a waffle mood? No problem. We swapped ours out for sourdough bread with The Society Royale, smoked salmon, crispy fried capers and two perfectly poached eggs stacked on sourdough, finished with hollandaise sauce. Light, fresh, and still very ‘Society’. We couldn’t resist a side of Sweetcorn Fritters with sweet chilli mayo either. Crispy, warm, and the perfect thing to share while you’re pretending you’re not going to order dessert.

Speaking of dessert … we ended with sharing their signature Biscoff Bliss. Topped with Biscoff sauce and crumbs, served with ice cream and cream, it was sticky, caramel-y, and the perfect finish to the meal. By the time we left, we were on a happy high from the meal and still talking about it hours later.

The Waffle Society is reimagining breakfast, lunch, and everything in between, and doing it in the most fun, family- and pet-friendly spot on the North Coast. If you haven’t made the short drive yet, put it on your weekend list; they open at 7:00 every morning, so you can get an early breakfast and go for a walk on the promenade after. It’s good vibes, fresh air, and waffles that will ruin all other breakfasts for you.
