Tucked inside the leafy, prestigious Mount Edgecombe Estate, a private family home has been quietly transformed over the past year into something extraordinary. It is a home built for comfortable, everyday family life, yet it carries an undeniable sense of occasion. The secret? Wallpaper that refuses to be a background.
The South African wallpaper studio renowned for its design, manufacture and professional installation, 23 Interiors, and Tayla Spencer worked hand-in-hand with the homeowner to craft a residence as personal as it is powerful.
For almost a year, the interiors evolved room by room, layer by layer. Rather than furnishing everything at once, Tayla and the 23 Interiors team allowed the house to tell its own story slowly, ensuring every pattern, texture and colour was considered not just for the room it lived in, but for the greater narrative of the home.
The Architecture of Confidence

The house itself offered a generous starting point. Luxurious proportions, natural light that pours through expansive openings, and spaces that flow seamlessly into one another while still holding their own identity. It was a refined architectural canvas that invited boldness.
That boldness required balance. Some rooms demanded a design that commanded attention, a pattern that stopped you in your tracks. Others needed to act as a connective thread, creating continuity as you moved from one space to the next. Scale, colour and placement were meticulously considered against the lighting and architectural lines of each room.
The greatest challenge, and ultimately the most thrilling part of the project, was orchestration. How do you create multiple statement rooms without them competing?
The palette of choices was not for the faint-hearted: high-shine snakeskin, tactile crocodile-inspired textures, vivid emerald greens that feel almost jewel-like, playful animal imagery and unapologetic graphic stripes. Each wallpaper holds a powerful identity of its own. The team had to choreograph sightlines, understanding exactly where the eye would travel, how a leopard print in one room would speak to a bold stripe in the next, and how every pattern would interact with furniture, lighting and art.
And with such high-impact, geometric designs, there is nowhere to hide. Precise wall preparation and expert installation were non-negotiable, with joins, alignment and pattern matching controlled to the millimetre.
Eclectic, Eccentric, Utterly Intentional
To describe the decorative style is to list words that rarely sit together so comfortably: bold, eccentric, eclectic and luxurious. It is confident without being careless. Theatrical without ever becoming gimmicky.
Tayla’s gift lies in her instinct. She combines patterns, colours and objects that, on paper, should clash, yet in reality, they sing. It is not a formula you can learn from a catalogue; it is a collected, intuitive and deeply personal style where every choice feels deliberate.
Colour and pattern are not accessories in this home; they are the central characters. Emerald tones pulse with energy, animal motifs bring a touch of wild luxury, and graphic stripes add architectural rhythm. The wallpaper is never treated as a quiet backdrop; it is part of the home’s personality.

That expression is grounded by layers of considered furniture, rich fabrics, curated artwork and decorative objects. The result feels collected over time, not bought as a matching set. Highly decorative finishes are paired with sophisticated, enduring materials, and textured wallpapers shift and change as the light moves across them throughout the day, adding depth, warmth and constant visual interest.
Every feature space was approached as its own experience, with its own mood and palette, yet Tayla’s distinctive creative direction ties them all together. If the team had to pick a favourite, it would be the leopard room. Floor-to-ceiling leopard print wallpaper envelops the space in pure, unapologetic glamour. It is magnificent, immersive and unforgettable. Ultimately, the true wow factor of this Mount Edgecombe home is not any single pattern or texture. It is the courage. Very few people would be brave enough to bring snakeskin, crocodile, emerald green, animal prints and bold stripes together on this scale and make it work.
Tayla did. With the support of 23 Interiors’ bespoke design and craftsmanship, she has pushed beyond conventional decorating and created something far more than a collection of bold rooms. She has created a masterpiece that is alive, memorable, and entirely her own.
