A Fashion Maven

Local designer Nikki Da Rosa shares how her hobby evolved into a business rooted in craftsmanship and community.

Nikki grew up in Morgenzon, a farming community in Mpumalanga, where family, creativity, and strong values shaped her early years. Around 2000, she made the move to uMhlanga, which became an important part of her journey. “Living here allowed me to grow, study, and eventually establish myself within a supportive and inspiring community,” she says.

Her journey into fashion design began when she was a little girl, inspired by a love for creativity and self-expression. “I remember spending all my school holidays in my gran’s sewing room, creating dresses for my dolls. My greatest inspiration came from my gran; she played a significant role in my life and passed down not only technical skills but also patience and love for the craft. Learning from her set the foundation for everything I created and who I am today.”

After completing her studies at Style Design College, Nikki officially began her journey as a professional fashion designer around 2010. She now specialises in custom-made garments that are thoughtfully designed to suit each client’s body and personality, from bridal and matric dance dresses to ball gowns and everyday wear. Creating timeless, elegant silhouettes is what she enjoys most. “Of course, bridal gowns are my favourite, making a bride feel beautiful and poised on her special day is indescribable.”

Her favourite part of being a fashion designer is seeing an idea come to life, from the first sketch to the final garment. “I absolutely love what I do. I’m so humbled to be able to create beautiful garments from scratch, knowing each piece has meaning to someone.”

Nikki finds inspiration from everyday life, fabric textures and movement, and the individuality of her clients. Her surroundings, along with the lasting influence of her grandmother, also play an important role in shaping her creative process: “My experiences with snorkelling and hiking strongly influence my designs through the colours, textures, and movement found in the ocean and landscapes.”

As an independent fashion designer, she manages all aspects of her business, which requires strong discipline and structure. A typical day in her intimate home studio includes planning designs, drafting patterns, cutting fabrics, sewing, meeting with clients, fittings, and the best part – fabric shopping. “I maintain a consistent routine and set clear boundaries between design work and administrative responsibilities. Training daily also plays an important role in my life, as it helps me stay physically strong, mentally focused, and emotionally grounded,” she says.

Nikki works closely with her clients to bring a unique vision to life. She prioritises open communication and honesty, offering guidance where needed. Her positive energy and passion help clients feel at ease while still maintaining a professional working relationship. This allows her to incorporate their individual style, personality, and sentimental details to create a one-of-a-kind piece. “When clients feel heard and valued, the end result reflects both their vision and my work.”

Through word of mouth, along with her skills and experience, Nikki has built a strong clientéle base. “I love uMhlanga, the vibe of the people, and the endless opportunities this community has to offer. Being part of this community has allowed my studio to grow organically and authentically over time, designing for not only local but international clients as well.”

Over time, her work has become more personal, and she has developed greater confidence in every piece she creates. “Experience has taught me to trust my instincts and approach each design with clear intention. Currently, I am exploring new techniques, design approaches, fabric choices, and modern silhouettes, with a particular focus on developing new bridal designs.”

Nikki’s advice for creatives is to stay patient, consistent, and true to your passion. Stand out! Learn continuously, you’ll always make mistakes, and practise makes perfect. Honour your craft, and never underestimate the value of hard work, authenticity, and believe in yourself.
