Training Beyond Fitness

by · August 23, 2026 · 2 min read

Former competitive boxer Derick Kasongo has built a loyal following of female clients by offering a different approach to personal training.

Known for his friendly personality and approachable nature, Derick incorporates boxing into his fitness sessions, training women as he would prepare a fighter. Rather than simply focusing on fitness, he holds the pads up and teaches basic boxing techniques, giving clients useful self-defence skills while improving their strength and physical health.

His sessions combine explosive boxing drills with functional fitness exercises to create varied, high-intensity workouts. While clients train at his gyms in Umdloti and Salta, they also enjoy taking sessions onto the beach when the weather allows.

Derick says beach boxing offers additional benefits, with the sand helping to strengthen the legs while increasing the intensity of each workout. Sessions often include beach runs, which provide a more demanding workout than running on roads or on a treadmill.

His client base also includes female runners and other athletes looking for sport-specific conditioning, as well as women referred by medical professionals to improve conditions such as low bone density or back pain.

The French- and English-speaking trainer begins every programme by assessing each client's fitness level before designing a training plan suited to their individual goals and abilities. A strong emphasis is placed on correct posture and technique to reduce the risk of injury, while workouts are regularly adapted to keep clients challenged and progressing.

He recommends three one-hour sessions a week but understands that time and affordability can be barriers. Having built his own business from humble beginnings, acquiring equipment one piece at a time, Derick aims to keep training accessible. Group sessions cost R200, while private sessions are R250 per hour.

Interestingly, he says women make up almost three times as many of his clients as men. During an all-women's training session at the Salta gym, the atmosphere was energetic, with hard work balanced by plenty of laughter and encouragement.

Speaking to us, clients repeatedly referred to Derick’s favourite sayings – "Get the job done" and "You will be okay" – describing him as a trainer who motivates without intimidation. They credited his supportive approach with helping them feel comfortable, stay consistent and enjoy working towards their fitness goals.
