Sureka Singh
Durban North Smile Center
Who am I?
I am one of the Directors of a management company called SMERA, a Sanskrit word translated as ‘smiling’ or ‘beaming’. My educational background consists of an MBA, complemented by an honours degree in Hindu Studies, and a Graphic Design Degree. I also have a diploma in Indian Classical Dance. Personally, and professionally, I have learned many valuable lessons. But by far, the most important thing is that community really matters and our collective strengths enable us to go beyond our imperfections, face the challenges, and thrive. I am also a mother to two beautiful daughters. It has been one of the most important and cherished parts of my life, if not the most important. I am inspired by my daughters, and I learn from them every day!
This is what I do
Durban North Smile Center is a multidisciplinary specialist healthcare centre where the healthcare practitioners strive to provide comprehensive care in a compassionate and supportive environment. We also manage a Non-Profit Organisation called the Wentworth Foundation for the treatment and rehabilitation of indigent children who are born with facial deformities. Our mission is always to serve others, and with this sense of togetherness and support from our community, we work towards invoking a healthy, vibrant and confident smile in all who come across our path.
A day at the office
Work is a home away from home. I consider my co-workers family, and each one a homemaker. I do believe that they embody the ethos of truly caring, coupled with an incredibly high level of skill. The special moments for me have been recognising the strengths of the people around me and bringing these strengths to their attention.
What Women’s Day means to me
My thoughts are reflected in the profound words of Sri Sathya Sai Baba, that “If women are given due recognition and encouragement, they will shine with brilliance in all fields and will serve the house, country, and the entire world gloriously, contributing to the welfare of the entire humanity.” Divine Discourse, April 19, 1998
For future female professionals
Asking for help has been one of the most difficult things that I have had to overcome as a woman. Often, we are expected to be superheroes—doers of all tasks. And while it is true that we can do a lot, we suffer the consequences of taking on too much. So, now I ask for help from the right people when I need it. I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate ALL the incredible women who have contributed to my belief that life doesn’t happen in isolation and that business success is governed in many ways by inclusivity, sharing, co-creating, compassion and understanding.

Austral Accounting
Who am I?
I’m a professional accountant and tax practitioner. With over 28 years of experience, I specialise in digital accounting solutions, financial planning, business systems digitisation and taxation. I’m passionate about empowering entrepreneurs, especially women, and guiding small businesses to thrive through accessible, tech-driven financial services.
A day at the office
My day starts early with strategy planning and reviewing client cases. I spend time with my team resolving complex tax issues or streamlining systems using tools like Xero. Every day is different, and I love that. The balance of problem-solving and client impact keeps me inspired.
My downtime
When I’m not crunching numbers, I’m practising Padel with my husband and friends or planning (more like dreaming about) my next travel adventure. I find joy in mentoring young professionals and am also part of a women’s investment club. My downtime also includes writing and studying—I am currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma to become a CFP (Certified Financial Planner) to guide our clients better, as well as writing a book with my dear friends.
What Women’s Day means to me
It is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much potential still lies ahead. It celebrates resilience, leadership, and collaboration. At this point in my career, it reinforces my purpose: to uplift other women in business, create access to financial knowledge, and the knowledge that what we leave behind is more important than what we take with us.

The Oyster Box Hotel
Who am I?
I am the newly appointed General Manager of The Oyster Box Hotel—one of South Africa’s most iconic luxury properties. My role involves ensuring excellence across all departments—from guest experience and hospitality standards to financial performance and stakeholder engagement. I also oversee the strategic and operational leadership. What makes this field special is its ability to create unforgettable experiences for people from all walks of life. Hospitality is about heart, precision, and vision. Being in this position, especially as the first female GM of this prestigious hotel, is deeply meaningful. It represents progress, possibility, and the power of representation. It’s a culmination of over 24 years of dedication across hospitality, tourism, gaming, and healthcare—both locally and internationally. I am currently completing my MBA in business administration, eager to drive business transformation and enhance customer experience.
A day at the office
Every day differs in hospitality, and that’s what keeps me inspired. My mornings typically begin with a walk-through of the property to connect with staff and guests, followed by strategic meetings with department heads to review performance, guest feedback, and operational priorities. Afternoons are often spent engaging with stakeholders, reviewing financials, and planning upcoming events or initiatives.
My downtime
When I’m not immersed in the world of hospitality, I find joy in spending time with family, and I love sports (soccer and rugby). I enjoy reading about leadership and emotional intelligence, which helps me stay grounded and inspired. Music and storytelling also play a big role in helping me decompress. I believe in creating space for reflection, which allows me to return to work with renewed energy and perspective.
What Women’s Day means to me
It is a powerful reminder of the resilience, brilliance, and leadership of women across generations. At this point in my career, it holds even deeper significance. Being the first female General Manager of The Oyster Box Hotel is not just a personal achievement—it’s a symbol of creating a new path for others. It’s about honouring those who came before me and empowering those who will come after. It’s a celebration of progress, inclusion, and opportunity for all women in the workplace.
For future female professionals
To every young woman stepping into the professional world—especially in hospitality and tourism—know that your voice, your vision, and your presence matter. Be bold, be curious, and never underestimate your ability to lead. Invest in your education, build strong networks, and seek mentors who challenge and uplift you. Learn to balance empathy with assertiveness and always stay true to your values. The road may not always be easy, but it is worth it. You belong in every room where decisions are made.
