The 2023 school year is in full swing and, as we celebrate the accomplishments of last year, we look forward to what these schools have to offer your future leaders!
Clifton School
For close to a century, Clifton School has enjoyed a reputation of providing a progressive, challenging and exciting educational experience for boys who are encouraged to explore, think critically, collaborate and achieve their potential.
Set in the heart of Morningside, Durban, Clifton School provides a platform for boys to thrive on personal growth in an environment where their passions are supported and their skills are honed. From Grade 00 to Grade 12, they balance the nuances of boys’ education, walking their journey with them as they become young men of significance.
On the sports field, in the classroom and through the arts, Clifton boys are given the opportunity to express their talents and harness their potential. They are the thinkers, the innovators and the pioneers. The schools aims to nurture them so that they reach their fullest potential.
This is Clifton. A school of tradition, innovation and connection. Clifton boys are proud South Africans who will succeed in the world, all while living the school motto, “Prodesse Quam Conspici” (which means “to accomplish rather than to be conspicuous”), thereby encouraging students to achieve and have a positive impact on society.

St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls
In high school, girls need to be presented with constructive challenges and be inspired in a nurturing, supportive environment. St Mary’s gives girls the opportunity to thrive and develop their character and individuality, giving them a sense of self-worth and respect. Christian values underpin all they do, and innovative, experienced teachers focus on developing each girl’s strengths and personal best. The school’s track record speaks for itself, and its excellent matric results year after year are testimony to this.
They provide quality education, which is precisely why they believe in smaller class sizes per grade, with a maximum of 25 girls in a class. This ensures every girl receives the daily attention and support that she requires.
As a school, they recognise the need for learning skills beyond the curriculum. The exciting ‘Thrilling Thursday’ for grade eight students and ‘iWoza Wednesday’ programme for grade nine students have run for a couple of years. The girls are exposed to techniques to help them think creatively and work collaboratively in project-based learning situations – broadening their perspectives and looking at issues which may have no right or wrong answer.
The ‘Thrilling Thursday’ programme includes modules about isiZulu culture, green chemistry, biomimicry and other essential topics. ‘iWoza Wednesday’ exposes the girls to a music module, designing more in the Makerspace, life orientation and a business studies module.
These girls are remarkable not only in the classroom but also on the sports field and as musicians and artists. St Mary’s has been inspiring girls since 1906, and its heritage is steeped in success. There are Old Girls who have inspirational stories to share and are dynamic role models for current pupils.
The school’s Boarding Houses have a wonderful, homely atmosphere where independence and community are fostered, and our boarders form a strong sisterhood where they make friends for life. The boarding programme is flexible, with girls staying for four nights of the week or choosing to stay in to enjoy the weekend programme, including excursions, gym classes, cooking and baking, skills classes, prep and games. Girls who board acquire confident independence, making the transition to university much easier.
Just think where talent will take her if she is in the right place today.

Durban Girls’ College
In an independent survey carried out by BusinessTech, Durban Girls’ College ranked 1st in KwaZulu-Natal and 3rd in the country based on the IEB Matric results of the Class of 2022. What an incredible way to start the year with two national rankings, number two and three in sport and academics respectively.
Further analysis of the matric results has shown that their grade average is 78%. Their IEB subject percentage marks are all above the national IEB percentages by an average of 10%. The following subjects are more than 10% higher than the national average: music, accounting, IT, mathematics and physical science. These are truly incredible achievements!
The top performing pupil was Hannah Hansa with an average of 93%, followed by Faathima Solwa with an average of 91%. Tazkia Abram and Sarah Andrew tied for third place with an average of 90%.
Recognising the pupils who performed well is important, but acknowledging that pupils have achieved the goals they set for themselves is also vital. With 79% of symbols being a B symbol or higher, many pupils attained personal bests in the marks they have achieved!
The excellent performance of the grade 12 students is a cumulative effort and relies on the building blocks prepared in the lower grades too. Eight of the 12 pupils who achieved seven or more distinctions started their journey at DGC in the Junior Primary.
The Durban Girls’ College class of 2022 has done themselves proud. These outstanding results are a testament to their hard work and dedication. Their pupils have performed exceptionally well whilst navigating the ongoing difficulties facing our country and particularly our province.
DGC wishes the class of 2022 well as they venture into their future endeavours, and we look forward to watching their progress as they go forth and enrich our world.
