No one can deny that Umhlanga is fast becoming an economic hub and is filled to the brim with hard-working and passionate men and women in business! Let’s meet some of these incredible people and learn more about them, their career and what truly inspires them.
Shirley Pearson of ActionCOACH
A Business and Executive Coach, ActionCOACH branch owner, entrepreneur, wife and mother: Shirley Pearson is truly a go-getter and succeeds in all she does!
After graduating from the University of Cape Town, Shirley started her career in the Industrial Relations Department of what was then the biggest retailer in SA, which catapulted her into starting her own business consulting company in industrial relations, strategic management and training and development in 1993. Shirley did a stint as a CCMA Commissioner and owned a few other businesses before taking her current role as franchise owner and Business and Executive Coach of the ActionCOACH iNala branch in Umhlanga Rocks. ActionCOACH is the world’s leading business coaching firm, and offers executive, one-on-one and group coaching, sales and leadership training, enterprise development, DISC profiling, business seminars and event speaking.
“I have had the rare privilege of working with a diverse range of businesses – and with an equally diverse range of business owners. I have run my own business for some 20 years and understand the pressures, challenges and pleasures associated with being your own boss. Becoming an ActionCOACH business coach gave me the opportunity to help other business owners and entrepreneurs get amazing results!” says Shirley proudly.
Shirley loves helping her clients rediscover their love for their business and achieve their goals, and she loves doing it in Umhlanga because of the area’s convenience (as it is becoming the hub of the KZN economy) and the unbeatable sea views!
So, what really inspires Shirley to be a successful businesswoman? “It is not only my duty but also my privilege to do what I can to contribute to the stability of South Africa. We desperately need an economy where our people can find dignified work. Government and corporates are shedding jobs, so most of the employment is going to come from private enterprise. My entire business is focused on supporting and coaching business owners to build strong, profitable and sustainable businesses. This is what gets me out of bed every morning and it’s what drives me every day to be the best business coach that I can be and to grow my business coaching firm. As a mother, I am inspired by my children to be the best version of myself. I know that the best way I can guide and inspire them to achieve their own success is to demonstrate it in my own life. At the end of the day, words don’t teach! ”

The Mindfulness Academy
After finding that life coaching helped her find the balance between her roles, relationships, business, health, well-being, spirituality and purpose, Noeline studied to become a life coach and is continuing her studies through an international institute for her certification in Personal Empowerment Coaching. She started The Mindfulness Academy which aims to help people (in particular women) unblock limiting beliefs and patterns, allowing them to live their most empowered lives. “I believe that empowering a woman is empowering a nation,” adds Noeline. “Healthy, happy and passionate women create strong families, communities and workplaces. Empowerment starts from within, so it is important to change limiting beliefs and narratives that are disempowering us as women and are keeping us ‘stuck’, which creates disharmony, illnesses, unhappiness, shame and guilt and impacts our quality of life.” Noeline’s role as a life coach has been the most rewarding, and she strongly believes that women could benefit from a life coach, such as an athlete does from a sports coach, to help them derive strategies and techniques to enable them to reach their full potential and steer them towards being their most empowered self!
Struan Campbell of PSG Wealth
Struan Campbell is a Wealth Manager focused on securities trading and is the Principal of PSG Wealth in Umhlanga. A former professional yachtsman, he has been in the financial services industry since 2003, and saw the move to PSG Wealth in 2011 as a “game changer”.
“It is an incredible organisation to be a part of! It emphasises the importance of personal service and enables me to build lifelong relationships with my clients,” says Struan proudly. His team situated at Granada Square focuses on stockbroking and the associated services and have effectively managed both local and offshore portfolios. “In addition, we provide ongoing investment advice to retired clients, who are now drawing incomes from their hard-earned savings, as well as have a growing base of young clients who are starting their own investment journeys.”
While Struan loves spending his time walking his busy Border Collie on the Glenashley beaches twice daily (and having a quick surf when the waves look good), he is driven by his focus on professionalism and treating clients fairly as a successful businessman. “Having a healthy interest in economics and the markets helps, but doing the right thing for people is my main motivating factor.”

Lauren Ginn of Lauren Ginn Accessories
Lauren Ginn Accessories is a local costume jewellery retailer and wholesaler, and you will find their products in boutique stores across KZN. The beautiful brains behind this business is mother, wife, shopper, coffee-lover and music-mad Lauren Ginn, who prides herself on being customer service driven and offering unique, affordable products displayed in gorgeous packaging.
“Raised by entrepreneurs, I always observed what went into running one’s own business. I spent a large part of my career in the UK in recruitment consulting, and when we moved to SA in 2010, it was a non-negotiable for me to have my own business with flexible hours as I wanted to spend time with my children. My accessories business was born when I put my love of colour, fashion and people together,” says Lauren. Alongside being a successful businesswoman, Lauren loves running, practising yoga, dancing, playing the piano, and spending time with people who fuel her energy.
So, what inspires Lauren? “My challenges and failures over the years make me want to do and be better. I value consistency, determination and a positive attitude and spend a lot of time thinking about past and current experiences and how they shape the future of my business. My relationships with customers, suppliers and those around me are paramount, and there is inspiration at large in being able to teach my sons about running a business and for them to observe the sheer grit, sweat, tears and also rewards that come with it.”
