30 July 2019: Patients with neuro or spinal conditions in Kwa-Zulu Natal now have access to world-class surgical procedures at Busamed Gateway Private Hospital, following the introduction of high-end theatre technology from Medtronic, a global leader in medical technology, allowing unmatched surgical precision and improved patient outcomes.

Comprising the Medtronic O-Arm 2, a surgical imaging system, and StealthStationTM S8, a surgical navigation system, the equipment provides surgeons with real-time data and 3D images that dramatically enhance accuracy and outcomes of neuro and spinal surgeries.

The equipment has been supplied under a Surgical Synergy Framework, a newly introduced Medtronic programme that makes it possible for more patients to benefit from the highly sophisticated nature of this advanced technology.

Long-term commitment

Peter Mehlape, Managing Director, Southern Africa Region, Medtronic, commented: “The agreement between Busamed Gateway and Medtronic goes beyond the supply of medical technology; rather, it represents Medtronic’s long-term commitment to enabling Busamed Gateway Hospital to provide more patients with best quality clinical outcomes.

“We will be collaborating with the hospital to establish itself as a recognised centre of excellence as growth in demand for these therapies increase,” he explained. This is the first time that Medtronic has entered into this kind of collaborative partnership with a hospital in South Africa. Mehlape continued: “Busamed is a multiple-award-winning, private hospital group providing specialist services in seven state-of-the art hospitals across South Africa, with a pioneering track record of innovative and forward thinking.

“We commend Busamed for its readiness to embrace new ways of doing business with a view to providing high-end services that deliver the best clinical outcomes for the patient.” Medtronic believes the collaborative approach of Medtronic’s Surgical Synergy Framework can be transferred to more high-end acute hospitals around South Africa, to drive efficiency and outcomes and to enable them to treat more patients with this gold standard technology.

Seamless integration of the entire operating room

The Medtronic O-Arm 2 is an advanced 2D / 3D intraoperative imaging system designed to seamlessly integrate into the surgical environment, allowing surgeons to make informed decisions intraoperatively while performing critical spinal surgeries.

The StealthStation TM S8 is an advanced navigation system that view patient images, merge and manipulate scans, and plan surgeries before entering the Operating Room. Automatic registration means that the surgeon is able to align multiple images into a single integrated image.  It also enables surgeons to precisely track the location of surgical instruments throughout the surgery.

“One of the major advantages of the Medtronic technology is that it ensures accurate placement of screws as compared to traditional 2D fluoroscopy, where there is a relatively high incidence of screw misplacement due to distortion of normal anatomy following spinal trauma,” Mehlape explains*. For patients, it enables less invasive approaches to more complex procedures. With on-demand intraoperative imaging from the O-Arm, there is no need to schedule a follow up radiology visit after surgery.

The StealthStationTM S8 systems along with the O-Arm, eliminates the requirement for continuous radiation exposure during the procedure as required during non-navigated procedures. The O-Arm system provides flexibility for surgeons to choose the appropriate amount of radiation (As Low As Reasonably Achievable or A.L.A.R.A) to the patient based upon individual clinical objectives. The system also provides additional data in challenging procedures, such as heavier patients or patients with unusual anatomy.
